As primary source materials in the library are digitized and made available online, the focus of related library services is shifting to include new and innovative methods of digital delivery via social media, digital storytelling, and community-based and consortial image repositories. Most images on the Web are not of sufficient quality for most media outlets, so what happens when patrons require high-resolution versions of images for use in their print publications or projects? Until recently, patrons at the University of Houston Libraries used a clunky, paper-based request process for high-resolution images that was frustrating for them and time-consuming for staff. The authors of this article outline how an interdepartmental team of University of Houston Libraries staff used Drupal to develop an automated patron request system that is modeled after online shopping cart experiences and integrates with the CONTENTdm-based University of Houston Digital Library. The article provides suggestions for libraries with digital collections about how to create a system that efficiently captures patron requests and streamlines staff delivery of high-resolution files.  相似文献

Student workers are a well-established component of academic library operations. Recently, their traditional role has expanded to include responsibilities that were previously assigned to librarians, including in-person and virtual reference support. This trend has raised concerns about service quality and highlighted the importance of adequate training and evaluation for student employees. This case study outlines the training and assessment program for student employees working on Ask a Librarian, an academic consortial chat reference service in Ontario, Canada. Evaluations indicate that student assistants are less formal in their communication style, do not consistently perform a thorough reference interview, and deviate from some Reference and User Services Association (RUSA) best practices. However, students are consistently rated very highly by users in exit surveys. With a training program that addresses communication, in-depth reference interview techniques, and consistent follow-up and assessment, students are a viable option for staffing chat and can meet high service quality standards for reference service.  相似文献

Scholarly communication is often thought of as the preservation of knowledge. In fact, it also influences the creation, transformation, and dissemination of knowledge. The new norms of scholarly communication are multiple authorships, inter-institutional and international collaboration, and use of social media. The evolving norms for the librarians and consortial groups are supporting research data management, aiding discovery of collaborators, and dissemination and preservation of results, especially in digital formats. Librarians are viewed as experts in scholarly communication on many campuses but their leadership is not always recognized.  相似文献

The California State University (CSU) system has a history of consortial purchasing of electronic resources. Its most recent endeavor is consortial Patron Driven Acquisition (PDA) of e-books. Two PDA e-book pilots, funded by the CSU Chancellor's Office, were conducted in 2011 and 2012. The aim of the pilots was to reduce duplication of e-books on CSU campuses, and determine if consortial PDA is appropriate for the CSU. This article provides an overview of CSU's cooperative collection development efforts, results from both pilots, and addresses how a consortial PDA program affects collection development locally on one CSU campus.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

The authors are both managers in OhioLINK libraries and have complex experiences working within a variety of simultaneous library consortial agreements. Their librarians'-eye view of consortia allows for a discussion of the nature of that landscape, some perspectives on the benefits and advantages of consortia as well as thoughts on the challenges and limitations of consortia. They conclude that while consortial partnerships hold the key to greater efficiencies and strength in libraries, the overlapping layers of consortial agreements that connect libraries form almost a web that can be constricting. Libraries should continue to be creative about how they exploit the power of consortial relationships, but they also need to learn how to lower the administrative overhead created by these agreements, particularly in the areas of communication and the organizational flow of information. Finally, the authors recommend that consortium committees spend more time on short- and long-term strategic planning.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

This column examines the lifecycle of one consortial digital repository service, the Alliance Digital Repository. Though the consortial service provided important infrastructure for members, the nature of digital repository work made it difficult to realize economies of scale. After eight years, members discontinued the shared service and replaced it with single-institution repositories that they could more readily support with the resources available to them. Based on my experiences helping members transition from shared to single-institution repositories, I offer advice for administrators planning or participating in consortial digital repository services.  相似文献

Potter's (2002) accessibility review of over 60 Alabama state-level websites was designed to establish a baseline for monitoring the state government's progress on online accessibility. The study found significant room for improvement. Only 20% of the reviewed sites met Section 508 requirements, and only 19% of the sites met WAI Priority 1 accessibility standards, based on a combination of automated evaluation and manual inspection of the code. In 2006, Alabama adopted ITS 1210-00S2: Universal Accessibility, which offered basic guidelines to assist developers in complying with Section 508 requirements. The current study revisits the state home pages that Potter evaluated to see how accessibility levels have changed over the years, particularly with the state's adoption of ITS-530S2. Like Potter, the current analysis is based on a combination of automated testing and a manual review of each page's HTML. The study found that compliance has not improved substantially since Potter's analysis and reinforces the idea that the presence of a standard does not correlate with compliance.  相似文献

Consortial participation provides opportunities and challenges for libraries. The intellectual and financial benefits are readily apparent-if libraries work together, they gain access to more content at a lower price. However, consortial participation also provides challenges with regard to coordination and communication. Though library directors/deans often provide initial leadership, especially in the selection of the type and range of consortial participation, collection development and electronic resources (ER) librarians tend to lead the way in work on the more detailed tasks that are involved. It is, primarily, more experienced librarians who are assigned to work with consortial representatives; there is a lot of on-the-job learning.  相似文献

Recognizing the digital opportunities available, the libraries of eight educational institutions in Minnesota built on a previously existing consortial relationship in order to explore the possibility of sharing a Digital Asset Management System (DAMS). This article discusses the experience of these institutions as they chose CONTENTdm and the considerations made when settling on an option viable for a consortium. It elaborates on the shared cost considerations, hardware purchases, and the consortium's experience as it purchased and implemented the software, formalized avenues of communication, and established collection standards. Abstract

This article presents the results of a survey of consortial and reciprocal agreements among academic interlibrary loan departments. An electronic survey was created using SurveyMonkey software. The survey consisted of 18 questions (Appendix A). The questions covered the types of consortial agreements by geographic area, what types of items are loaned, the number of reciprocal agreements, fees for non-member libraries and resource sharing agreements that use integrated library systems. The purpose of the survey was to gather information on the various types of consortial agreements in use today in interlibrary loan departments.  相似文献

The article outlines the initiatives of the local consortia of the eight academic institutions funded by the University Grants Committee (UGC) of the Hong Kong SAR Government. The role and services that this consortium provides for its members, especially with respect to consortial electronic purchasing agreements and joint licensing, are examined. The paper addresses many of the problems, difficulties, and challenges within consortia when coping with their internal needs, facing the need to both cooperate and compete with other consortial members, and making individual and consortial decisions in an environment of increasing budgetary constraints and technological advances. For e-resource librarians, maintaining e-book and e-journal holdings within electronic resource management systems is a labor intensive and often manual process. In 2014, with the aim of saving library staff valuable time and effort, the Online Computer Library Center, Inc. (OCLC) launched a service to provide automated holdings management within the WorldCat knowledgebase. For a select group of content providers, including some of the largest e-book aggregators, holdings information can be populated and updated automatically within the knowledgebase without intervention from library staff. At the University of Toronto Libraries, we conducted a study to assess the accuracy and efficiency of these automated holdings management services. This presentation outlines the results of the study and provides suggestions for further improvement to the current services offered.  相似文献

Library consortia have grown substantially over the past ten years, both within North America and globally. As this resurgent consortial movement has begun to mature, and as publishers and vendors have begun to adapt to consortial purchasing models, consortia have expanded their agendas for action. The movement to globalize consortia is traced (including the development and current work of the International Coalition of Library Consortia-ICOLC). A methodology is explored to classify library consortia by articulating the key factors that affect and distinguish consortia as organizations within three major areas: strategic, tactical, and practical (or managerial) concerns. [目的/意义]建立健全情报产品标准及其质量控制机制是确保情报分析产品与服务质量的重要举措。研究美国情报产品标准及其质量控制机制,为我国制定情报产品标准提供参考。[方法/过程]通过考察美国情报界和执法界情报产品规范相关法律政策与标准文件,总结归纳美国情报产品类型、规范与质量控制机制,分析美国情报产品标准设计的基本逻辑与思想。[结果/结论]美国按照项目流程和要素规范管理逻辑,秉持"合法性""实用性""实证性""用户需求导向"的基本理念,遵循"源数据控制、认知缺陷控制、分析过程控制和陈述规范控制"的基本思想,按照"假设-证据(信息)-结论(判断与建议)"的分析框架,从"一般质量要求、内容规范、形式规范、信源属性、用户反馈/质量监管、法庭证词与法律考量"出发规定情报产品标准,通过"情报分析人员自我把关、用户反馈、同行评议、主管机构监管"等四类控制机制,确保情报产品符合"准确、客观、及时、独立"的质量标准,形成相对成熟的情报产品标准与质量控制机制。建议我国借鉴美国经验,立足《国家情报法》,明确情报产品的基本要求,制定统一的情报产品标准,提供情报产品范本,建立有效的质量控制机制,以提高我国情报产品的质量。  相似文献

Some library consortia have investment portfolios which are under long term management. Having a proper written investment policy will aid in good governance and help the consortium properly manage its assets for the long term. A policy will define investment objectives, prohibited investments, a review process, a spending policy, and other needed details.
