This article considers CD-ROM instruction in the context of the research path in the library of the interdisciplinary academy. The article also identifies key components of postmodernism (arguing that the library is a site of postmodernism) and barriers to research imposed by library collections and services. How CD-ROMs magnify these barriers to research and offers an instructional method using the active teaching and learning method known as critical pedagogy to empower the researcher. In addition, logistical and content components of the critical pedagogy based CD-ROM workshop are outlined.  相似文献

A seismic retrofitting project required the UCSB Library (University of California, Santa Barbara) to permanently reduce its on-site collections by 120,000 volumes. To accomplish this successfully, a strong collaboration with the faculty was essential. This article describes a planning process in which the library worked with a faculty committee to implement a campus-wide survey of faculty and graduate students regarding their behaviors and preferences in accessing and using the collections. The survey outcomes informed a common understanding of which physical materials should remain on-site and which could be moved to storage with the least impact on research and teaching.  相似文献

With the current economic situation, and the latest advancements in information technology, the information profession is faced with the need to continuously redefine the library as a concept and as a physical environment. Current trends increasingly appear to define the library as a provider of information. This article describes the argument for resource sharing with its different attributes as it appears in the literature, as well as its validity in the case of Kuwait. Two main research collections in Kuwait that constitute the basis for the information infrastructure of the country are used as examples. These collections are the Kuwait University Libraries, and the National Scientific and Technical Information Center, “NISTIC”. A profile of the two collections including their coverage, trends in budget, and service are used to justify the viability of resource sharing among two leading institutions in Kuwait.  相似文献

The creation of new degrees at an academic institution often requires additional library resources to provide adequate support. Identifying the needed library materials can be especially difficult for interdisciplinary programs. The process of serials analysis undertaken for new interdisciplinary degrees at the University of Texas at Dallas was explained in this session. This article describes the creation and implementation of focus groups to evaluate the effectiveness of a health sciences library's liaison program of the College of Pharmacy faculty and to better understand the faculty's information needs in order to design new and improved library services. The liaison services support the teaching and research needs of faculty and students through literature research, classroom teaching, and an extensive library collection of pharmacy literature. Focus group results demonstrated a high level of satisfaction with library liaison services and collections. Opportunities exist for expanded interaction with graduate students and greater marketing of library services to increase faculty awareness of specific library programs.  相似文献

What is the value of library services and resources in the college classroom? How do library instruction and collections contribute to academic teaching and learning outcomes? A chemistry instructor, instruction librarian, and technical services librarian collaborated to answer these questions by combining chemistry education and information literacy pedagogy to assess student learning. The authors developed curriculum units that teach information literacy skills and scientific literature research in a General Chemistry Laboratory course for Honors students. Their study extends beyond examining library instruction and collections assessment in isolation. Rather, their research protocol intends to contribute to student learning outcomes assessment research. The authors propose that an embedded, mixed-methodology, and longitudinal approach can be used to collect data and assess outcomes in terms that describe and measure the value of library services and resources.  相似文献

[目的/意义] 探索数字环境下研究型图书馆特藏建设的新内涵与新形式,分析海外研究型图书馆特藏建设的规划与实践情况,梳理总结发展经验及策略,为国内图书馆特藏建设提供参考借鉴。[方法/过程] 通过对18所英美研究型图书馆战略规划调研,梳理分析研究型图书馆特藏建设的发展方向及支撑科研的要素;从战略规划文本中提炼行动要点;根据特藏建设报告总结在国内的适用性经验,并在此基础上对中国科学院文献情报中心的满铁特藏提出规划方案。[结果/结论] 在数字化环境下,特藏不仅涵盖传统珍稀资源,亦包括具有独特价值的特色资源。英美研究型图书馆重新定位特藏价值,在馆藏规划、馆藏数字化、空间设置、展示与传播、深度融入教学科研等方面对特藏进行整合,合作与服务的理念值得借鉴。针对特藏案例,发现问题,并提出适用性解决方案。  相似文献

[目的/意义]研究加拿大高校儿童图书馆学教育现状与特点,旨在为我国儿童图书馆学专业教育的尽快开展提供参考与借鉴。[方法/过程]采用网络调研方法,从学科学位、课程设置、师资力量3个方面深入调查与分析加拿大儿童图书馆学教育的内容。[结果/结论]总结得出加拿大在儿童图书馆学教育领域具有学科交叉性较强、课程细化程度较高以及学以致用原则凸显等特点,提出对我国开展儿童图书馆学教育的3点启示:以交叉学科为背景,增设联合型学位课程;以专业教材为指导,细化层次性课程分类;以专职教师为依托,构建应用型教学模式。  相似文献

This study is aimed at examining the impact of an institution's medical library on the clinical decision-making of medical officers in two Nigerian University Teaching Hospitals. Medical information sources consulted by medical officers in Nigeria University teaching hospitals were examined. The results of the study revealed that the information provided by the library was appropriate to their clinical decisions. Medics rely mostly on their institution's library and personal data collections for information. Information is sought for the purposes of managing patients, evaluating new drugs, and support for the diagnosis of ailments. Scientific and technical journals, Index Medicus, Excerpta Medical, CD-ROM (MEDLINE) databases and foreign magazines are widely consulted. Respondents judged the library collection as fair. The study recommends that the existing medical libraries and information centers in Nigeria be well stocked for the retraining of librarians in modern information technology.  相似文献

As academic library functions and activities continue to evolve, libraries have broadened the traditional library model, which focuses on management of physical resources and activities, to include a digital library model, transforming resources and services into digital formats to support teaching, learning, and research. This transition has affected professionals' roles and activities due to new required skills. This study examines qualifications and skills required of professional positions involved in digital resources, services, and technologies as changing aspects in academic libraries. Data was collected from job advertisements for digital library positions posted in College and Research Libraries News during the nine years from 1999 to 2007. The study verifies shifts in staffing needs and required qualifications with digital focus on collections, services, and technology applications in academic libraries. The results confirm that a digital librarian is an emerging position in academic libraries. LIS educational implications and further investigations to validate the results are suggested.  相似文献

Tablets said to date back to 2000 b.c. represent the earliest medical writings so far discovered. The history of the medical library (defined as a place where a collection of medical writings is kept) is traced through ancient and medieval civilizations, and the dependence of advancement or decline on the attitude toward learning and knowledge is demonstrated.The change in structure of medical libraries that took place around the 1500s with the development of scientific societies is discussed. Medical libraries of Colonial America are described and the history is brought forward to the era of public library collections of medical material in the early 1900s.  相似文献

[目的/意义]哥伦比亚口述历史中心是世界口述历史研究的标杆机构,通过对其进行详细调研分析,为我国图书馆口述历史工作的开展提供借鉴与启示。[方法/过程]通过对哥伦比亚口述历史中心的3个主要网站及相关文献的调研,对其岗位设置与人员职能、资源建设与加工组织、资源存档与使用、教育培训与跨学科合作、资金来源与调查研究5个方面进行详细调查。[结果/结论]调查发现,哥伦比亚口述历史中心具有注重分工与专业背景、广泛开展跨学科合作、重视教育教学、藏教研分离4个方面的特点。从图书馆的视角出发,对我国图书馆口述历史工作的开展,提出以下4点启示:培养人才,建设专业团队;拓展选题范围,进行跨学科合作;积极参与,搭建课程体系;分解职能,实现分离管理。  相似文献
