Understanding of mathematics is needed to underpin the process of search, either explicitly with Exact Match (Boolean logic,
adjacency) or implicitly with Best match natural language search. In this paper we outline some pedagogical challenges in
teaching mathematics for information retrieval (IR) to postgraduate information science students. The aim is to take these
challenges either found by experience or in the literature, to identify both theoretical and practical ideas in order to improve
the delivery of the material and positively affect the learning of the target audience by using a tutorial style of teaching.
Results show that there is evidence to support the notion that a more pro-active style of teaching using tutorials yield benefits
both in terms of assessment results and student satisfaction.

There is an expectation that college students graduate with competency in information literacy. Ideally, institutions of higher education integrate these competencies throughout their curricula in a progressive manner. High-impact educational practices contribute to student success. The purpose of this article is to examine recent literature about five of the high-impact educational practices (capstone experiences, learning communities, service learning and community-based learning, undergraduate research, and writing-intensive courses) to understand the extent to which they include the integration of information literacy competencies. This article describes a two-week graduate course on information literacy, developed and taught by a librarian and a professor of industry and technology, and intended for teachers and librarians in elementary and secondary schools. Information literacy is not only the content of the course but also the basis of its structure: active, student-centered learning with several group assignments helps students develop skills in finding information, analyzing and interpreting it, and putting it to practical use. 近年来许多科技馆开展了STEM教育项目,也出现了偏离STEM教育理念和教学效果不理想等问题。通过文献研究和相关教育学理论的学习,笔者认为STEM教育是基于科学与工程实践的跨学科探究式学习,并兼有项目实践与探究式学习双重特征的“基于项目的学习”(PBL),为保障STEM教育项目的教学效果提供了有效的教学法工具。在此基础上,长春中国光学科学技术馆运用PBL进行了STEM项目教学设计的实践尝试。 相似文献

Teaching medical information retrieval and application courses in Chinese universities: a case study
An important aspect of Chinese academic health science libraries is their involvement in teaching medical information retrieval courses as part of the medical curriculum. Health science librarians in China have a more formal teaching role than is generally found in Western countries, including many full-time teaching positions. This article provides a case study of Kunming Medical University Library, where courses are provided as credit units at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels. The teaching practices of Chinese health science libraries are compared with teaching experiences reported in Western countries. It is noted that Chinese government's educational policy is similar to that of the United States in promoting the role of the library in teaching subjects as part of the medical curriculum. In China, this has lead to the development of teaching departments within health science libraries and the appointment of full and part-time teacher librarians. 相似文献
