Continuing education for librarians and educating library school students in the areas of technical services are topics often discussed within the field of librarianship. The presenters in this session provided alternatives to “on the job” education for technical services professionals. Two presenters provided strategies for instructing an online continuing education course on acquisitions. Andrew D. Osborn has had three separate, successful careers. From 1920 to 1962 he practiced as a librarian in Australia and the United States earning an international reputation in cataloguing and serials work. From 1962 to 1971 he taught full-time in library schools in the United States and Canada. From 1971 to 1977 he operated as an antiquarian bookseller in Sydney, Australia. This article comments especially on the high significance for Australian librarianship of the four short years he spent at the University of Sydney 1958-62, at the end of his first career.  相似文献

A recently completed study by the Indiana University Graduate Library School Research Center investigated the economic interaction between US publishers of scholarly and research jourrrals and the libraries which, with frozen or decreasing budgets, are attempting to provide adequate serials coverage and continuity, while also required to meet other budgetary needs. This paper presents some of the findings concerning the magnitude of the problem, as reported by over 400 libraries for the years 1969-73. It also examines the dramatic shift in fund allocations from the book to the serials budget in academic libraries, and reports the priorities established within the serials acquisition process where alternative decisions concerning acquisition, retention, and cancellation had to be made.  相似文献

The increase in the number of serial publications, the growth of holdings in libraries, and the maturation of librarianship are seen as largely responsible for the development of a specialty in serials librarianship by the time of the American Library Association's centennial celebration in 1976. This development often resulted in the organization of a separate serials department. In the decade following the ALA centennial several trends (e.g., economic stringency and automation) have converged to cause a re-evaluation of organizational patterns. In particular, the form versus function debate regarding serials organization is examined by reviewing professional activities and the published literature.  相似文献

美国儿童图书馆学教育发端于19世纪末20世纪初,儿童图书馆学课程建设已有超过百年的历史。本文首先梳理了53个ALA认证的硕士学位教育项目和34个AASL-CAEP认证的学校图书馆硕士教育项目,系统展示了美国高校儿童图书馆学教育的概貌;然后筛选出84所高校的603门ELSY课程,并对这些课程进行了统计与内容分析。当前,美国ELSY课程按主题可区分为六大类型:文献类、服务类、管理类、职业类、研究类和实习类。ELSY课程有超过1/3(约占39%)为文献类课程,其核心内容为文献知识;有约1/4(约占26%)为服务类课程;实习类课程约占16%,每个学校都至少有一门实习类课程;管理类、职业类课程较少,分别占比8%和6%,并非每个学校都开设了此类课程;研究类课程占比最少,约占5%,是美国ELSY课程的短板。美国在ELSY课程内容建设上的经验与问题,可为我国设立和发展儿童图书馆学课程提供借鉴。表7。参考文献47。  相似文献

This paper reviews the current situation in library school education for medical librarianship in the United States and Canada based on information from a questionnaire sent to teachers of courses in medical librarianship in accredited library schools. Since 1939, when the first course devoted entirely to medical librarianship was offered at Columbia University, courses have been introduced into the curricula of at least forty-seven of the ALA-accredited library schools. In 1978 there were seventy courses available through forty-seven library schools. Possibilities for specialization in medical librarianship are examined. Course content is reviewed. Implications of the MLA certification examination for library school courses are explored.  相似文献

A study is made of developments in serials librarianship in Nigeria during the past decade. Evidence shows that serials collections in Nigerian acadamic and special libraries are generally small. However there was considerable growth in the collections during the period. Efforts are made through current awareness services to assist users to exploit the collections. There is adequate arrangement for bibliographic control of serials though this is impaired by the ignorance of publishers. Various efforts at interlibrary cooperation, production of union lists of serials and automation have not yielded very fruitful results.  相似文献

One of the signposts of 21st century librarianship is the shifting paradigm to an increasingly dynamic collection to serve the resource needs of our patrons. Interlibrary loan is an integral library service for this model. This article focuses on key facets of successful practices and administrative issues that maximize efficient resource sharing, particularly regarding nonreturnable materials (articles/book chapters). Issues regarding tools, staffing, accurate and informative serials holding information, deflection policies, embargoes and database licensing are identified.  相似文献

The purpose of this study is to attempt to determine how much librarians know about stress management and how they handle stress. The needs of the individual librarian are highlighted, and stress management training is recommended as a response to these needs. An increasing number of articles is appearing in library literature on the topic of stress/burnout and librarianship. However, only a few are empirically based, and still fewer report efforts made by libraries to address the issue. The survey found that 28 percent of responding librarians know little or nothing about stress management and that 82 percent think it would be beneficial to learn about it. Reinforcing the need to learn about it are the results of the present survey. These indicate that only 11.1 percent of the respondents practice stress management preventively at this time. While 60 percent do not think that stress management is a necessary part of librarianship training, an overwhelming 88.8 percent feel it should be part of one the job in-service training or of staff development programs. Supporting this indication of desire for such training is the finding that the subjects' responses to how they presently react or respond to stress indicate that 72 percent of the behaviors and feelings engaged in or experienced are destructive in nature.  相似文献

Abstract

This study examines reasons for the shortage of qualified academic librarians in China and recommends ways to position Chinese academic libraries to move into the modern era.

Interviews were conducted with 20 academic librarians in China and 20 in the United States, in one library in each country, to collect data for a comparative study. This paper compares Chinese and US academic librarianship in terms of reasons for entering this profession, academic education in library and information science, and requirements for knowledge and information skills.

Chinese librarianship faces great challenges in the recruitment and education of librarians and with the library system itself. It is time for the government, university officials, libraries and society as a whole to learn to promote librarianship and build a powerful librarian workforce, to meet the needs of China's social and economic development.  相似文献

Presenters Susan Davis of the University at Buffalo, State University of New York, and Sarah E. Morris of Reed Smith, LLP, led an informal discussion of past and future trends in serials librarianship. By comparing their perspectives as new and mid-career librarians, they illuminated various topics related to work with serials and electronic resources, including the skill sets required for e-resource management, users' demands for online access, and generational attitudes within the profession.  相似文献

[目的/意义] 针对目前图书馆员专业素质参差不齐、新老馆员满足岗位需求有困难、部分馆员缺乏独立科研能力等问题,对北京地区高校图书馆员的培训需求进行调查分析,以提出有针对性的培训策略指导实践。[方法/过程] 基于北京地区高校图书馆馆员培训需求问卷调查和BALIS培训中心历次线下培训的反馈调查,从培训的内容需求和形式需求两个方面,通过交叉分析、总结归纳,得到高校图书馆馆员的培训需求,并据此提出培训改进策略。[结果/结论] 提出以下馆员素质提升策略:统筹培训内容、制定系统化的培训方案,细分馆员类型、分层开展馆员培训,精心打造培训内容、注意培训内容的多能力融合,以面对面培训为主、拓展培训渠道、做好培训保障。  相似文献
