Although our popular culture stereotypes relationships with in-laws as problematic, these relationships have largely been overlooked by communication researchers. In contrast to existing studies focusing on dyadic relationships, this study looked at how in-laws are assimilated into the family group as newcomers, using structuration theory to examine how routines are reproduced in families. In personal interviews, participants described how their families had assimilated newcomers or how they themselves were received into their spouse's families. A thematic analysis revealed specific communication routines that had to be adjusted upon entry of newcomers, including conversational topics, expected amount of interaction, use of joking, and conversational styles. Adjustments to these routines, although difficult to negotiate because they were not openly discussed, helped to transform the family of childhood into the family of adulthood. Structuration theory would suggest that the perceived stress in relationships with in-laws occurs because newcomers upset the comfort of families by disrupting their communication routines.  相似文献

By high school, many students have dropped out of the pipeline that will lead to science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) occupations. We examine the role of vocational anticipatory socialization (VAS)—the types of messages adolescents receive, message sources, and adolescents' frameworks—on youth's educational and vocational interests. Adolescents (37 focus groups, N = 229) reported that they received two types of VAS messages: personal fulfillment (advising students to prioritize their well-being) and career detail (advising students about specific aspects of an occupation). Adolescents used three career frameworks (enjoyment, ability, and goal) that filtered and often magnified VAS messages and experiences. We extend VAS research by identifying two primary purposes of the career advice embedded in VAS messages and three career frameworks. Practical implication are that parents can affect adolescents' beliefs about their abilities and potential enjoyment of STEM careers by supplementing personal fulfillment messages with career detail messages. Individuals in STEM occupations are in the best position to encourage adolescents by offering career detail, discussing how their career can be rewarding and how math and science classes can influence their career attainment.  相似文献

In a variety of fields, particularly human service occupations, the management of emotion is a precondition of employee and client well being. Based on qualitative data from participant observation and interviews, this study examines how firefighters are socialized to manage feelings and emotional displays. It concludes that firefighters recognized a need to manage their own emotions and those of their clients in order to deliver adequate service. Veteran firefighters facilitated the use of emotion labor techniques among newcomers by considering the emotion management knowledge and capabilities of job candidates during employee selection processes, providing habituated emotional events, and reinforcing customer service expectations. Newcomers actively participated in their own socialization to local emotion expectations through observational information seeking, retrospective surveillance, and performance of a normative newcomer role demeanor. The article concludes by offering practical and theoretical implications.  相似文献

成人教育是我国终身教育体系的重要构成和学习型社会的强力支撑。成人教育工作者作为成人教育活动的核心力量,其自身的专业水平直接关系到成人教育应对当前各种机遇和挑战的能力。因此,无论从成人教育理论还是从实践发展的视角来看,成人教育工作者专业社会化都是一个新兴而重要的研究课题。所谓专业社会化,是指个体习得一定的专业知识、专业技能、专业态度、专业价值以逐步胜任其专业角色的过程。通过对四位资深成人教育工作者的质的研究发现,成人教育工作者专业社会化是通过职前教育、在职培训、终身自我导向学习和反思性实践等多重路径共同实现的,而非单一路径在发挥作用。总体而言,职前教育和在职培训在成人教育工作者专业社会化历程中具有奠基性的意义和作用,终身自我导向学习可以说是成人教育工作者专业社会化的有效阶梯,而反思性实践则堪称成人教育工作者专业社会化的羽翼。另外,成人教育自身的实践性较强、以及我国成人教育学科建设与理论研究发展滞后等原因,又导致了我国成人教育工作者专业社会化路径的特殊性。  相似文献

This article brings together two areas of research: studies on risk perception of technologies and studies on vocational/career choice. This is an important link since decisions concerning technologies are influenced by decision makers’ risk perceptions and these in turn may be related to educational and career paths.We analyze students of different academic disciplines with regard to their risk perception of four technologies. The aim is to find out whether there is a relationship between area of study (as a precursor of vocational and career choice) and risk perception of technologies regarding health, environment and society. The four technologies under study are renewable energies, genetic engineering, nanotechnology and information and communication technologies (ICT). Key results are: irrespective of academic discipline risk of genetic engineering on average is rated highest and renewable energies lowest. This holds for all the risks studied (environmental, health, societal risks). On average, students from different academic disciplines differ in their risk perception. Factor analyses show that common dimensions of risk are the technologies and not the kind of risk. Regression analyses show that the variables influencing perceived risks vary between the technological fields.  相似文献

政府信息的自由使用和民间开发是政府信息管理的重要趋势。解决我国政府信息开放与开发低水平的问题,应通过社会化和商业化的机制,从源头上解决好原动力问题。政府信息开放的前期基础工作、开放中的咨询服务工作、信息加工和信息增殖服务都可以运用社会化或商业化的方式来完成。但也要对社会化和商业化开放与开发进行科学管理,处理好收费问题,授权开发和自主开发的关系问题;要完善制度建设。  相似文献
