This study is the first investigation into the types of contents in young adult (YA) web pages in public library websites in Japan. The study reveals that YA web pages, in general, place more emphasis on providing guidance on YA services, on helping young adults with regular learning, on the use of information resources for reference services, and on improving the communication abilities for young adults, rather than on providing research assistance to adults on YA services. Furthermore, an IRIS (Information Reference Instructional Sharing) Contents Model is proposed for YA web pages, whereas an IRIR (Information Reference Instructional Research) Contents Model is presented for children’s web pages, based on the differences between the contents of YA web pages and those of children’s web pages.  相似文献

A progenitor article for this work can be found in Public Library Quarterly 27, no. 4. This study is the first to report on the types of contents in children's web pages and the characteristics of Web-OPACs for children in public library websites in Japan. This study reveals that children's web pages, in general, place more emphasis on providing guidance on library services and on the use of information resources for reference services, rather than on helping children with regular learning or providing research assistance to adults on children's services. Pigeons were trained to classify composite faces of two categories created by mimicking the structure of basic-level categories, with each face consisting of an item-specific component and a common component diagnostic for its category. Classification accuracy increased as the proportion of common components increased, regardless of familiar and novel item-specific components, with the best discrimination occurring at untrained original faces used as the common components. A no-categorization control condition suggested that categorization gives rise to equivalence for item-specific components and distinctiveness for degrees of prototypicality. When some item-specific components were shared by exemplars of the contrasting categories, those that were not overlapping between the categories became the effective cues for the pigeons’ responses. Implications of these results are discussed in the context of current categorization and associative learning theories.  相似文献

This study compared 3- to 4-month-olds' recognition of previously unfamiliar faces learned in a moving or a static condition. Infants in the moving condition showed successful recognition with only 30 s familiarization, even when different images of a face were used in the familiarization and test phase (Experiment 1). In contrast, infants in the static condition showed successful recognition only when the familiarization duration was lengthened to 90 s and when the same image was used between the familiarization and test phase (Experiments 2 and 3). Furthermore, presentation of multiple static images of a face did not yield the same level of performance as the moving condition (Experiment 4). These results suggest that facial motion promotes young infants' recognition of unfamiliar faces.  相似文献

This study is the first to investigate the amount and type of information about children's services described in Japanese public library websites, with particular reference to the Web pages intended for children, and the extent to which usability is taken into account in the design of these websites. Further, the study analyzes what kinds of content are more prevalent in children's services as described in Japanese public library websites in comparison with the actual delivery of these services. On occasion, rating scales are used in which the verbal labels are compressed to saturate one end of the response continuum. In these scales, differences arise between the normal meaning of the label and its scalar position. This paper investigated the influence of the label and the position in defining the meaning of the labeled position. Three forms of labeled rating scale were constructed where the labels FAIR and GOOD were systematically moved. Subjects judged the desirability of premarked responses on the scales. In addition, two forms were used to determine the desirability of the unlabeled scale position and the desirability of the label independent of a rating scale. It is widely acknowledged in the literature on philosophy of biology and, more recently, among biologists themselves that the gene concept is currently in crisis. This crisis concerns the so-called “classical molecular concept”, according to which a gene is a DNA segment encoding one functional product, which can be either a RNA molecule or a polypeptide. In this paper, we first describe three categories of anomalies that challenge this way of understanding genes. Then, we discuss proposals for revising the gene concept so as to accommodate the increasingly known complexity of genomic architecture and dynamics. Our intention is to provide an informative overview of recent proposals concerning how we should conceive of genes, which are probably not very familiar to many science educators and teachers, but can bring relevant contributions to genetics teaching, in particular, to a more critical treatment of genes and their role in living systems.  相似文献

Youth athletes are known to be at high risk of musculoskeletal (MSK) injuries. Children in developed countries are increasingly adopting a sedentary lifestyle. Although some risk factors related to sports activities have been reported, the effect of lifestyle (i.e. screen time behaviour) on MSK pain in youth athletes is not well known. This study aimed to examine the association of game playing and TV viewing with MSK pain among youth athletes. A self-administered questionnaire was mailed to youth athletes belonging to the Miyagi Amateur Sports Association. The final study population included 6,143 youth athletes (male, 71.1%; age range, 6–15 years). Multiple logistic regression analysis was used to examine the association of game playing and TV viewing behaviour with MSK pain. The point prevalence of MSK pain was 25.5%. The longest category of game playing time (≥3 h) was significantly associated with MSK pain as compared with the shortest category (<1 h) (odds ratio, 1.39; 95% confidence interval, 1.12–1.73, p = 0.003). There was no significant association between TV viewing time and MSK pain. These results suggest that game playing time might be an associated factor for MSK pain among youth athletes.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

Both Children’s services and Young Adult (YA) services have been recognized as essential in Japanese public libraries. This article reports on the present status of Children’s services and YA services in Japanese public libraries, based on the results of several investigations. These studies show that children’s services in Japanese public libraries already are generally popular. On the other hand, this article indicates that YA services in Japanese public libraries are gradually improving, due to the national recognition of the importance of YA library services. Examples of good practices in Children’s and YA services in Japanese public libraries are described and analyzed to identify the common themes that flow through these innovations. This article concludes with observations about the future involving library services for children and YAs, from the viewpoints of face-to-face traditional services and indirect services through their official websites.  相似文献
