Abstract With the proliferation of distance education courses in the field of library and information science today, academic library paraprofessionals have the means to continue their education while continuing to be productive in their jobs. Courses can be taken online through institutions and organizations such as library schools, community colleges, and network consortia. Suggestions for types of places to look for appropriate courses are discussed. The paraprofessional library employee is in a unique position to pursue continuing education, and library administrators will find that supporting such efforts benefits both the employee and the library. 相似文献

ABSTRACT Acknowledging Arizona State University's (ASU) long-term goal of 100,000 students in online degree programs and recognizing the 8 new 100% online undergraduate programs slated to come online in 2010, ASU Libraries is planning for the continued integration and relevance of the library to online students and programs. During the summer and fall of 2009, the ASU Libraries Task Force for Online and Extended Education met to develop the elements of a Comprehensive Plan for Library Support of Online Programs. The plan includes: (1) guiding principles for library support of online and extended education; (2) a needs assessment and environmental scan; and (3) a sustainable and scalable plan for library support of the online programs. [目的/意义]通过对美国iSchools院校图书馆学硕士在线教育现状的分析,归纳总结美国图书馆学硕士在线教育的经验,为后续研究提供借鉴。[方法/过程]基于国内图书馆学教学模式改革的现实需求和在线教育的广阔前景,通过对20所美国iSchools院校的官方网站进行调研,分别从学分学制、课程数量、课程类别、核心课程等方面对其在线教育模式进行详细分析总结,得出对我国图书馆学在线教育建设与发展的启示。[结果/结论]通过调查发现,美国iSchools图书馆学相关专业硕士在线教育呈现出3个特点:课程形式灵活多样,多举措保障在线教学质量;在线课程数量多、覆盖范围广且课程体系完备;在线学习与校园学习基本相同。据此,结合国内现实情况,提出我国图书馆学在线教育的建设应关注国际在线教育的发展态势,改革图书馆学传统教育模式;采取多种授课方式,提高图书馆学在线教学质量;以职业发展为导向,注重人才培养个性化;实现图书馆学传统与在线教育两者优势结合。 相似文献

王重民是我国图书馆学专业教育的重要开拓者之一。本文从五个方面系统梳理了王重民对我国图书馆学和目录学教育的重要贡献:(1)发起创建北京大学图书馆学专修科,并不断推动专业发展,是新中国图书馆学教育最重要的开创者和奠基者之一;(2)制定图书馆学系教学计划,组建图书馆学、目录学教研室,筹建系资料室,不断充实图书馆学系的师资队伍;(3)构建立意明确、反映时代要求的图书馆学课程体系,并亲自讲授大量专业课程;(4)注意加强专业教材建设,制定教材建设计划并亲自编写大量讲义和教材;(5)尽职教育,倾心教学,培育专业人才,培养了众多爱岗敬业的图书馆工作者。王重民在整理古籍、发展图书馆事业,特别是创办图书馆学教育、培育专业人才等方面做出了不可磨灭的贡献。今天纪念王重民先生的意义在于:一是继承他以弘扬光大祖国优秀典籍为己任、献身工作和治学的敬业精神,二是不断梳理和深入研究他在发展图书馆学和目录学教育、培育专业人才方面留下的宝贵精神财富,努力推动具有中国特色的图书馆学及图书馆学教育发展。 相似文献

[目的/意义]研究加拿大高校儿童图书馆学教育现状与特点,旨在为我国儿童图书馆学专业教育的尽快开展提供参考与借鉴。[方法/过程]采用网络调研方法,从学科学位、课程设置、师资力量3个方面深入调查与分析加拿大儿童图书馆学教育的内容。[结果/结论]总结得出加拿大在儿童图书馆学教育领域具有学科交叉性较强、课程细化程度较高以及学以致用原则凸显等特点,提出对我国开展儿童图书馆学教育的3点启示:以交叉学科为背景,增设联合型学位课程;以专业教材为指导,细化层次性课程分类;以专职教师为依托,构建应用型教学模式。 相似文献

Abstract Institutions, as we know, are quickly embracing distance education, in the forms of online or Web-based courses and programs at phenomenal rates. Oftentimes, however, significant institutional structures, including such areas as registration, advising, library, and technical support are overlooked until too late. Institutions must have clear, well-planned strategies in place in order to maximize their students' learning experiences and overall satisfaction with distance education programs to avoid attrition and maximize retention. This paper provides many useful and easy to implement strategies for institutions considering distance education, as well as for those already engaged in serving students online. In particular, this paper explores experiences of students pursuing the Master of Library and Information Science degree through a Web-based program. Abstract Over the last decade, an increasing number of academic institutions have built satellite campuses and developed online courses to meet the needs of distance learners. As these academic institutions have expanded, demand for library service has increased significantly. In an attempt to expand its course offerings to distance learners, Regent University began offering online courses during the early 1990s, and it also developed a new satellite campus. As the Regent University Library has explored new and varied ways to serve students on the new satellite campus and other distance learners, the implementation of services has been challenging, but rewarding, for the library staff. 相似文献

Emporia State University offers several distance education programs with students scattered throughout the United States. Although the university moved quickly into providing remote education, the library has struggled to provide equitable access to services and resources for distance learners. This study examines how academic librarians at the Complutense University (Spain) perceive project management techniques that are becoming increasingly popular in library and information centers due to the need to comply with their strategic planning and services. To reach this goal, a quantitative and qualitative methodology was applied and a survey, in the form of a questionnaire, was used as a data gathering tool. The response rate was 31.2%. The key findings are based on respondents' education regarding project management skills and their expertise managing projects, as well as the presence of project management courses in the Library and Information Science Spanish curriculum. This study revealed that over one third of the academic staff completed their project management training by self-directed learning. Additionally, over half of them stated that they had not participated in any library project in the last five years, and almost half of the library staff concluded that project management techniques are quite important as formal courses in the Library and Information Science university programs. The study is interesting and revealing for those library and information services professionals who are facing day-to-day to users' demands and Library and Information Science challenges. 相似文献

ABSTRACT At a time in our economy when library budgets are strained and staffing is under the microscope, librarians need to reassess and retool their library services for online students to provide quality, depth, and community without causing meltdown. The authors analyze some of the retooling undergone at their library to meet the shifting demographics of students who in 10 years have grown from 1,000 online students to 14,500 and increased to 65% of the students now taking online classes. To meet this challenge, the library centralized library services by closing the regional Library Information Centers and established a Multimedia Department focused on developing tutorials and online training materials, established an outreach librarian position, and worked with reference and instruction librarians to expand their roles as liaisons to the various academic programs. The library is learning to work smarter, not necessarily harder, and much leaner. 相似文献

This article discusses the training of para-professional library staff in new technologies with an emphasis on reference services. For the purposes of the article, paraprofessional is defined as those not holding the professional library science degree. General training principles and procedures are discussed including the training environment, equipment, handouts, and goals or projected outcomes. The results of a survey of training needs for Library and Information Studies graduate students working in the Northern Illinois University Libraries is incorporated into the article. This article concludes by suggesting that paraprofessional training is in effect a continuing education opportunity that focuses on skill development and learning transfer as a means to improve work performance. 相似文献

ABSTRACT The Distance Learning Department of the Regis University Library is charged with providing library instruction for undergraduate and graduate students enrolled in accelerated courses offered at six distance campus locations and online. The department has created a series of animated online tutorials (i.e., screencasts) accessible via the library Web site. These interactive tutorials cover basic library services and resources and represent an effort to provide asynchronous bibliographic instruction to remote library users. This paper describes the use of screencasting software to create library tutorials and related issues including software options, production tips and techniques, and project management. In addition, the author describes the use of Google Analytics to record usage statistics and perform assessments. 相似文献
