Abstract

For academic librarians with faculty status, service to the profession often forms part of the requirements for promotion and tenure. Considering the concept of professional service raises questions as to what specific activities qualify; what is their weight, both within the service requirement and also as compared with other requirements, such as research and publication; and how are service activities best documented. Examination of ARL Standards and selected promotion and tenure documents revealed inconsistencies between institutions and great flexibility in interpretation by most.  相似文献

The purpose of this multi-institution study was to develop an understanding of where and how ranking lists are being used for the purpose of informing promotion and tenure decisions. Individuals were selected for this survey who, were at the time, serving in administrative positions at 115 R1 Carnegie research institutions. The survey questionnaire consisted of demographic, closed-response, and rating-scale questions designed to understand the respondents' experiences and attitudes concerning their academic department's promotion and tenure process. Results of this survey will inform librarians on practices associated with promotion and tenure involving open access publishing and the use of standardized journal lists.  相似文献

For many academic librarians, scholarly research is required in order to attain tenure or promotion and it is widely acknowledged that many early career librarians find this process challenging. Using a survey of >200 untenured or recently tenured academic librarians, this study investigates early career academic librarians' access to and experiences with research support activities designed to develop research skills and confidence. Specific attention is paid to informal mentoring, formal mentoring programs, and writing groups. Responses indicate that early career librarians need supports that target three dimensions of the research experience: research design and methods; work practices and accountability; and emotional elements. Despite this, survey respondents had limited access to formal research supports that offer instruction and guidance in the research process, leaving them to rely heavily on informal mentoring. This study highlights the need for libraries and library organizations to invest their resources in research supports for early career academic librarians, helping them to become more effective and confident researchers.  相似文献

To discourage faculty members from publishing in questionable journals, tenure and promotion standards in which the librarians play an active role can been developed. These standards have been effective in terms of identifying publications in questionable outlets. However, we need to explore how these systems are perceived by the main actors in research, which are the researchers. This study explores the perception of the researchers at a university in Ghana who have been evaluated by a system implemented to discourage publishing in questionable publication outlets. We collected data using an online, largely qualitative questionnaire distributed to all faculty members that had applied for promotion since the implementation of the verification process. The results show that the majority of the faculty members are satisfied or very satisfied with the new tenure and promotion standards. There are differences across faculties, and this seems to be tied to concerns about the choice of publication outlets. Furthermore, the dissatisfied faculty members are concerned with the role of the library in the verification process whereas the satisfied trust the judgement of the librarians. We discuss implications of the results as well as future development of the standards.  相似文献

The objective of this study was to reveal how the national economic recession has affected the nature and extent of support for tenure track librarians at Association of Research Libraries (ARL) member institutions. The authors surveyed 43 ARL Deans and University Librarians to discover the criteria for achieving tenure and the current institutional support for tenure-related activities. All of the responding libraries reported experiencing at least moderate reductions in their overall budgets, with the majority indicating increased workloads for faculty and reductions to monetary support for professional development. Despite this adversity, the survey indicated that the expectations for achieving tenure for librarians in the areas of research and service have not changed.  相似文献

We report the results of a survey of tenure and promotion criteria in university departments of literature and language in the US. It is clear that the publication of a scholarly monograph remains a conditio sine qua non for the awarding of tenure. This article puts forward an “assessment/action research/publication” cycle that integrates aspects of the assessment, research, and Institutional Review Board (IRB) processes to provide academic librarians with a systematic approach for balancing competing workplace demands and give library managers a roadmap for creating a “research culture” (Jacobs, Berg, and Cornwall) within their libraries. The article argues that librarians and library managers have much to gain by integrating action research into librarians’ everyday work loads, including increased ease in meeting publication demands for tenure and/or promotion, institutionalizing habits of reflective practice across all library service areas, and overall library improvement.  相似文献

The increasing importance of research assessment is but one factor within the ever-changing scholarly communication landscape that is challenging libraries to develop new services to serve the needs of their academic communities. Institutional budget allocations, grant funding, and faculty tenure and promotion increasingly depend on performance indicators, including bibliometrics such as citation counts, impact factors, the h-index, and other quantitative measurements of research output. With their longstanding expertise in collecting, categorizing, and analyzing data, not to mention their familiarity with scholarly databases and indexes tracking cited references, librarians are well qualified to meet the emerging demand for bibliometrics services.  相似文献

[目的/意义] 通过对高校图书馆阅读推广评价机制的研究,达到规范相关工作细节、改善阅读推广活动品质、提高活动效果的目标。[方法/过程] 利用网络调研法和文献调研法对大量高校图书馆阅读推广案例以及相关工作进行分析研究,梳理归纳阅读推广评价机制的关键要素。[结果/结论] 预评价机制的实施能够很好地保障阅读推广工作质量,促进图书馆的资源合理分配。评价指标与基础数据的收集和分析可以成为阅读推广工作重要的基础,而活动建档、绩效考评和激励制度的实施将进一步完善评价机制。高校图书馆阅读推广评价机制的建立可以大大解决阅读推广工作中的痛点,使得馆员有激情策划组织活动,读者有热情参与反馈,良性循化下的阅读推广工作事半功倍。  相似文献

Continuing education for the reference librarian, bibliographer and/or faculty member in an ARL library derives from every facet of the job. Certain functions, such as that of bibliographer, require formal orientation to the political climate of the teaching faculty. Other activities such as reference, online searching, and bibliographic instruction may involve prior experience but become more fully developed through the job itself. The role of faculty member necessitates publishing for promotion and tenure, which may include assistance from colleagues in critiquing papers intended for publication. Beyond diverse and demanding job requirements, however, the librarian needs intellectual and aesthetic development. A model used in the medical profession could serve librarianship well.  相似文献

借鉴行为科学理论,从读者角度,采用实证方式,找出高校图书馆阅读推广活动效果的影响因素,并构建结构方程模型,用于分析阅读推广活动中的必要条件对阅读行为的影响作用。通过对数据的分析,发现阅读推广活动中的自主支持、结构支持和参与支持对提升读者阅读动机和阅读行为起到了积极的作用。由此确定了提高高校图书馆阅读推广活动有效性的影响因素,并为高校图书馆开展阅读推广活动指明了方向。  相似文献

ABSTRACT

Digital scholarship connects scholarly research to students and the public in nontraditional ways. Authors present research in a digital form, which may include links to primary source material and teaching guides. In this format, design and accessibility are important, and, unfortunately, those quick to dismiss all digital work as teaching or outreach can overlook the research element. The confusion over what digital scholarship is and how to evaluate it can affect promotion and tenure decisions in academic institutions. This article will examine issues surrounding the availability of peer review for digital scholarship, especially in the field of American history. Mechanisms for peer review must be created by scholarly associations and applied to digital scholarship to ensure this form of scholarship is acknowledged and rewarded.  相似文献

Faculty status means having the same privileges of rank, promotion, tenure, compensation, leaves, and research funds as other faculty. Arguments against faculty status include that focusing on status detracts from librarians' mission of providing access to information; that the rigorous requirements of faculty status are not something that librarians are prepared or qualified to pursue; and that good librarians would be just as good without faculty status. These arguments can also be used in favor of faculty status, especially as it relates to increasing the quantity and quality of library and information science literature and contributions by academic librarians.  相似文献

[目的/意义] 针对当前我国财经高校图书馆阅读推广活动中的长效发展乏力问题,探索建立一套规范有序的阅读推广长效发展体系,引导财经高校图书馆长期、深入地开展阅读推广和服务,提高人才培养及服务质量。[方法/过程] 采用问卷、文献调查、访谈以及网络调查等方法,对财经高校图书馆阅读推广活动进行调查统计,分析现有阅读推广活动中存在的规划缺失等问题。[结果/结论] 提出通过开展连续性的读者研究、加强读者阅读指导与阅读教育、建立阅读推广网格化体系、加强科学规划、建立阅读推广活动监督及有效性评价制度等举措,建立基于读者需求的图书馆阅读推广长效机制,保障财经高校图书馆阅读推广活动长期、稳定发展。  相似文献

Much of the recent library literature related to scholarly communication and predatory publishers has focused on faculty concerns regarding publishing in questionable journals for tenure or promotion purposes. However, little attention has been paid to predatory publishers in the context of student research and library instruction. The presence of predatory journals in library databases may put students at risk of including questionable content in their academic output. While the results of this study reveal that the number of predatory publishers and their associated journals are fairly small in the three article database packages and one directory that were examined, predatory journal content was more prevalent in one particular resource and in certain subject areas.  相似文献

While all scholars want the value of their work to be recognised by their peers, the relentless pressure to publish on those seeking tenure or promotion tends to result in a low risk, stick with the mainstream approach to research and publication. Academics opt to stay within the parameters (hereafter referred to as “the box”) of safe research, repeatedly returning to the same models, topics and theories. This is understandable, but could one consequence be that only a modest number of publications in e-government and e-democracy stand out for their originality, creative or innovative thinking? In this paper, the reasons why there seem to be so few breakthrough papers are explored. It is argued that there is a need for more original thinking. A number of ideas and actions that may help to support and develop such thinking are proposed.  相似文献
