图书馆是高校的信息中心,其使用效率的高低直接反映了学员的自我学习能力。为分析图书馆的使用效率,需对图书馆设施、文献及信息检索资源现状等进行调查。论文设计了图书馆使用效率调查问卷,并基于正交设计方法进行问卷调查中样本点的选择,不仅缩减了样本空间,而且保证了样本的代表性。本文以国防科技大学三号院分馆使用效率调查研究为例,进一步阐明上述方法,并给出了效应估计与方差分析结果。参考文献12。  相似文献

Using Steven Carl Fortriede's method in Moving Your Library: Getting the Collection From Here to There as a framework, we successfully moved the New York University Abu Dhabi Library from a library and off-site storage facility to one new library. While we generally followed Fortriede's advice, we deviated from his plan in three important ways: We created a color-coding system for the boxes, which eliminated the need to keep the boxes in strict order; we integrated two collections during the move (rather than before); and we created phantom books to create space for lengthy multivolume sets in the smaller collection.  相似文献

Cooperative storage involves two or more libraries sharing space within a facility. Kansas State University leases space at the Library Annex, a remote storage facility owned and operated by the University of Kansas. Various challenges are involved in maintaining access to remotely stored materials for resource sharing and document delivery purposes. The Pennsylvania Academic Library Consortium (PALCI) has developed a shared print archive, an archive that promises to maintain rarely used print journals from noted scientific society publishers for a ten year period. The goals for this collaborative project are to ensure access to commonly held print journal titles, to allow libraries to withdraw materials so they may re-purpose valuable space, and to share the responsibility of storing print titles at individual institutions instead of requiring a centralized storage facility. This paper discusses the grassroots origins for this project and the process decisions involved in turning the archive from vision into reality.  相似文献

In the past seven years, the University of Michigan Library's programming model has evolved to be responsive and reflective of staffing areas of interest and expertise. Our team-based, iterative model enables us to develop responsive exhibits, workshops, experiences, and events in our community. This article explores our experiences in developing this model through the lens of some of our collaborations with the Ann Arbor District Library (AADL). Our approach to programming opportunities builds on learning by doing, building deeper, mutually beneficial relationships with other organizations, and continually making sure we are truly developing programming with our audience (our community) in mind. While public and academic libraries often develop distinct sets of services, collections, and expertise to serve their respective communities, successful collaborations can yield interesting opportunities for more effective engagement and programming. Our relationship with AADL has helped us to identify and better understand how we can connect our teaching and research missions with the interests and needs of the broader community in which we are situated.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

We examine how students in academic libraries work; their furniture, technology and space needs; research methods used to determine these; and the results and evolution of our space design and assessment efforts. From the creation of a new collaborative center at Mann Library at Cornell University in 2007 to our latest space redesign in 2015, we've used a variety of qualitative and quantitative methods—including surveys, interviews, usability tests, and participatory design exercises—to discover the study behaviors and needs of users, applied this data to help redesign our collaborative study spaces, and assessed the results.  相似文献

As an essential department at a higher education institution and an informal learning space, little is known about how academic libraries contribute to student learning on campus. The Olin Library sought to learn the role of library space in our users' learning. We surveyed users about their learning behaviors in a specific space prior to a scheduled renovation and then in the same space after. We wanted to determine how the renovation changed users' perceptions of their learning behaviors in that space.  相似文献

In August of 1989, the Library of Congress selected fourteen libraries nationwide to participate in a pilot project to test and determine the feasibility and desirability of remote online access to the Library's information system. The California State Library was selected as one of the participant libraries. During the project, State Library staff performed 187 subject searches on various topics in the Library of Congress Information System (LOCIS). LOCIS was easy to search, and contained a variety of useful search features. Overall, staff found access to LOCIS to be a valuable addition to our existing online search services.  相似文献

The St. Lucie West Library, also known as the FAU Treasure Coast Campus Library, is a joint-use library facility, with Florida Atlantic University partnering with Indian River Community College and the St. Lucie County (FL) Library System. This article will discuss the circulation, course reserves, interlibrary loan, and collection management services of the three partners, as well as the training of new employees in this joint-use venture and the methods of managing the St. Lucie West Library. The Dynamic Library: Organizing Knowledge at the Sitterwerk – Precedents and Possibilities, Soberscove Press, 2015, is a compilation of essays on a symposium about new systems of knowledge organization. The symposium, Archives of the Future: New Orders of Knowledge at the Sitterwerk was held at the Sitterwerk art library, material archive, and exhibition space in St. Gallen Switzerland, November 2011. It brought together professionals from libraries, academia, and technology to brainstorm and share current work on future systems of organization. In an effort to better answer these questions and make a tighter connection between library objectives and the broader needs of the community, the Oak Park Public Library embarked on a journey to “turn outward.” Following the Harwood model for community engagement, Oak Park has made strides in unifying its internal operations and strengthening strategic partnerships. Summary

Difficult patrons have been considered primarily from the perspective of the problem behaviours they present in libraries. Many have attempted to define the problem patron and to provide advice and develop guidelines for frontline public service staff. To understand the difficult patron in academic libraries we need to answer three questions-How well do we know our patrons? Do we unwittingly create difficult patrons through our failure to appreciate their needs? Do we regard patrons as difficult because the way they use libraries and conduct their information research does not match our idea of how it should be done? The answers to these questions suggest that we need to reconceptualize both our patrons and the services we provide. Library staff need to see difficult patrons not as problems but as challenges to the service ideas and standards we hold. A paradigm shift is necessary if we are to reconstruct our beliefs about our patrons, their information seeking behaviours, and the services we provide to meet their needs. Some strategies for developing the skills of library staff to work effectively with difficult patrons are presented.  相似文献

In response to the growth of digital collections, services, and changes in legacy operations, Rodgers Library for Science and Engineering at The University of Alabama prepared a plan to re-emphasize the “library as place.” Changing expectations and needs of users was another catalyst for change. A major project followed to repurpose substantial space formerly used to house collections and deliver services linked to physical collections. As part of the change, the library streamlined legacy operations and added new services such as specialized academic software and new technology. The library was developed as a place where students can collaborate, share, and perform a wide variety of research and instructional activities using special technologies and modern facilities. Importantly, the library was designed as a flexible environment with emphasis on mobile furnishings and technologies. To create ambience and build an inviting atmosphere, library space was embellished with attractive art and high-demand accessories such as casual seating and café services. This paper reports on repurposing an area of about 13,000 ft2 in the Rodgers Library for Science and Engineering. The project was completed in about one year. Preliminary assessment data revealed that in the year following space repurposing, library use increased dramatically with patron visits up about 43% over the prior year.  相似文献
