This paper describes the potential for bibliometric analysis of citation data from the literature of the arts and humanities. To date, such analyses have been very limited, due to the subject orientation of most bibliometric researchers and to the lack heretofore of an appropriate citation data base. A standard procedure in citation analysis is that all papers published in one year are assessed at the same later point in time, implicitly treating all publications as if they were published at the exact same date. This leads to systematic bias in favor of early-months publications and against late-months publications. This contribution analyses the size of this distortion on a large body of publications from all disciplines over citation windows of up to 15 years. It is found that early-month publications enjoy a substantial citation advantage, which arises from citations received in the first three years after publication. While the advantage is stronger for author self-citations as opposed to citations from others, it cannot be eliminated by excluding self-citations. The bias decreases only slowly over longer citation windows due to the continuing influence of the earlier years’ citations. Because of the substantial extent and long persistence of the distortions, it would be useful to remove or control for this bias in research and evaluation studies which use citation data. It is demonstrated that this can be achieved by using the newly introduced concept of month-based citation windows.  相似文献

One of the critical issues in bibliometric research assessments is the time required to achieve maturity in citations. Citation counts can be considered a reliable proxy of the real impact of a work only if they are observed after sufficient time has passed from publication date. In the present work the authors investigate the effect of varying the time of citation observation on accuracy of productivity rankings for research institutions. Research productivity measures are calculated for all Italian universities active in the hard sciences in the 2001–2003 period, by individual field and discipline, with the time of the citation observation varying from 2004 to 2008. The objective is to support policy-makers in choosing a citation window that optimizes the tradeoff between accuracy of rankings and timeliness of the exercise.  相似文献

本文以中国社会科学引文索引(CSSCI)1998~2006年收录的全部网络参考文献数据为基础,跟踪了历年作者字段、题名字段、来源字段、时间字段的规范程度以及四个关键字段的完整性及变化趋势,最后选取题名字段和来源字段均完整的记录作为样本,考查在当前时间点上,历年数据的可追溯性.研究发现,网络参考文献著录质量较差,可追溯率也很低, 从时间序列上看,著录质量并没有特别显著的变化.此外,博客等网络社区的兴起,给网络参考文献的著录及统计带来新的问题.  相似文献

The last few years have seen the emergence of several open access options in scholarly communication which can broadly be grouped into two areas referred to as ‘gold’ and ‘green’ open access (OA). In this article we review the literature examining the relationship between OA status and citation counts of scholarly articles. Early studies showed a correlation between the free online availability or OA status of articles and higher citation counts, and implied causality without due consideration of potential confounding factors. More recent investigations have dissected the nature of the relationship between article OA status and citations. Three non-exclusive postulates have been proposed to account for the observed citation differences between OA and non-OA articles: an open access postulate, a selection bias postulate, and an early view postulate. The most rigorous study to date (in condensed matter physics) showed that, after controlling for the early view postulate, the remaining difference in citation counts between OA and non-OA articles is explained by the selection bias postulate. No evidence was found to support the OA postulate per se; i.e. article OA status alone has little or no effect on citations. Further studies using a similarly rigorous approach are required to determine the generality of this finding.  相似文献

[目的/意义] 进一步探讨Web 2.0环境下选择性计量指标的有效性。[方法/过程] 以"data mining"为检索词,获得Mendeley与Web of Science两平台的交叉文献集合,分别对交叉文集的被引频数与阅读数、被引频数与标签数进行相关性检验后,从每组选取指标值差异最大与最小的各100篇文献进行具体分析。[结果/结论] 传统计量指标被引频数与Mendeley中的阅读数和标签数均存在弱相关性,证实了以阅读数和标签数为代表的选择性计量指标可以在一定程度上评估文献的影响力,且文献类型、出版年份和作者h指数会对用户阅读、引用等文献利用行为产生影响。未来文献影响力评价的发展方向应为传统文献计量方法与选择性计量方法的结合。  相似文献

The impact of monographs in a vertebrate zoology collection on the scientific literature was assessed using a randomly selected sample (52 monographs), Science Citation Index and a statistical package. Characterstics of the monographs considered were: copyright date, circulation, citation frequency and subdiscipline (ichthyology, herpetology, ornithology, mammalogy). Citing references were dispersed among journals in a wide array of disciplines. A few monographs proved to be very highly cited (one being cited nearly 600 times), and so generated the majority of the database of 2,971 citations. The ichthyology monographs generated the broadest subject dispersion among citing references. The herpetology collection is less active than are the others in terms of circulation and current citation frequency. The sample has been generating an ever increasing share of the citations in the Science Citation Index. A method that applies citation analysis to the evaluation of monograph collections is outlined.  相似文献

The existing approaches to the definition of the scientific contributions made by researchers are analyzed. A bibliometric database is developed on the basis of the quantitative analysis of publication activities monitored by the most representative global citation systems, such as the Web of Science (Thomson Reuters, USA), Scopus (Elsevier, the Netherlands), and the Russian Science Citation Index (Scientific Electronic Library, the Russian Federation). The system allows teachers and researchers to consult their scientific publications (contained in Scopus, the WoS, and the RSCI),check citation levels and the h-index, filter data by the date of publication, and access the profiles of other researchers.  相似文献
