Conclusion In this paper we briefly described the current status of research in the field of digital libraries interoperability, mainly
with respect to federated data processing such as permitted within the Open Archive Initiative framework. We then presented
the CERN Document Server Software suite that is a free software package main-tained by CERN providing an online digital library
solution for mid- to large-sized document repositories. The set of CDSware modules was described and the differ-ences with
other existing tools briefly mentioned. Finally we have mentioned a typical usage statistics illustrating the scope of grey
literature and networked con-ditions of the CERN Document Server.
We pointed out that the current trend in grey literature management goes toward institutional repositories build upon the
distributed and federated model. Further research is going on within the CDS collaboration in this area, focused particularly
on (i) semantic interoperability using ontologies in distributed and federated data processing and (ii) ranking technologies

Abstract With the transformation of the card catalog into the online public access catalog came the expectation of its increased functionality. For the most part, today's online catalogs perform an expanded list of tasks quite effectively. Bibliographic utilities, system vendors, and individual libraries continue to improve bibliographic retrieval by providing new and better services through the catalog. In spite of these improvements, many observers believe that online catalogs have reached their maturity. Today's information environment includes a wealth of material to which online catalogs cannot provide universal and up-to-date access. Increasingly, librarians are turning to federated searching portal applications to find a means of managing the flood of digital information that threatens to engulf users. This chapter describes essential functionality of such tools, suggesting directions and strategies for improving them. The author concludes that, while the online catalog will continue to function as the principal tool for access control of the library's physical collections, the federated searching portal will ultimately serve as the library's principal Web gateway to digital resources. 相似文献

ABSTRACT In this study, students' use of a new educational Web portal was evaluated with particular emphasis on searching and browsing strategies. The effects and implications of a federated search system are also discussed. Fifty-four students, ranging from 5th to 12th grade, were given five tasks to complete using the SchoolRooms interface. The tasks required students to use both the search box and the categorical browse feature on the Web portal. Data collected were analyzed to determine time on task, rate of success and the subjects' awareness of success, and the type of search method chosen to complete the tasks. In general, students preferred the search-box strategy to the categorical-browse strategy, but exposure to both strategies resulted in increased use of the browse strategy. Success rates varied widely by task. Students had a difficult time distinguishing between various media and format types returned by the federated search. Results suggest that while students prefer a search-box strategy, it is by no means the only way they search for information. Students experienced difficulty in trying to de-aggregate the results of a federated search engine. These findings have implications for information literacy and library instruction. Forthcoming analysis of these data will address the factors related to search success. 相似文献

Abstract The MetaLib Library Portal (MetaLib) is a federated search tool that enables simultaneous searching of multiple electronic resources in a single interface and provides links to resources' native interfaces. Many libraries have already implemented this library portal or various components of it. Prior to launching MetaLib at the University of Florida, the authors conducted a usability study to ensure MetaLib features implemented were appropriate for UF's research community. A total of fifteen faculty researchers and graduate and undergraduate students participated in testing and discussing the product during the spring 2006 semester. This paper illustrates the process used to evaluate MetaLib, which included determining a timeline, developing scenario-based and focus group questions, recruiting participants, and conducting usability tests and focus groups. In addition, the authors describe some of the major findings of the study and the solutions recommended in the formal “Usability Test Report for MetaLib,” and provide an analysis of the challenges associated with usability testing of a federated search tool. 相似文献

Changing trends in library use and management of e-resources were discussed by Jane Burke from ProQuest/Serials Solutions. A paradigm shift in library collections has occurred in which e‐resources are now the major component of new library materials, requiring new ways to manage and display them. The use of e‐resource access and management services was discussed as a helpful tool, along with federated searching. Burke suggested that by spending less time processing print materials and ending bibliographic instruction, more time will be available for librarians to market and manage e-resources, which will be of greater benefit to today's library users. 相似文献

Peer-to-peer (P2P) networks integrate autonomous computing resources without requiring a central coordinating authority, which
makes them a potentially robust and scalable model for providing federated search capability to large-scale networks of text-based
digital libraries. However, peer-to-peer networks have so far provided very limited support for full-text federated search
with relevance-based document ranking. This paper provides solutions to full-text federated search of text-based digital libraries
in hierarchical peer-to-peer networks. Existing approaches to full-text search are adapted and new methods are developed for
the problems of resource representation, resource selection, and result merging according to the unique characteristics of
hierarchical peer-to-peer networks. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed approaches offer a better combination
of accuracy and efficiency than more common alternatives for federated search of text-based digital libraries in peer-to-peer

Discovery tools are the next phase of library search systems. Illinois State University's Milner Library implemented EBSCO Discovery Service in August 2010. The authors conducted usability studies on the system in the fall of 2010. The aims of the study were twofold: first, to determine how Milner users set about using the system in order to better inform customization choices, which in turn would create better search experiences, and second, to find out whether discovery tools fix the problems of federated search. With federated search technology, users often felt frustrated by the search experience. Some reasons for the frustration included a desire for better ways to determine the relevancy of search results and for more information about the material included in the records. The authors determined that while many federated search problems were solved, some issues persisted. Overall, the move to EBSCO Discovery Service at Milner Library has been a positive experience for its users. 相似文献
