When emerging professionals start working in archival institutions, libraries and museums (also referred to as collecting institutions), they bring knowledge and skills gained through internships, formal study, volunteer activities and previous work experience. They learn new processes quickly, are passionate about working with holdings or collections and are keen to build their knowledge. They gain exposure to the different disciplines that are reflected in the roles of archival institutions, libraries and museums as they build their professional identity and consider future career directions. What else do they need? A research study about the experiences of a group of individuals embarking on first or subsequent careers and starting new positions in collecting institutions found that relationships were an essential component in developing their skills and knowledge and planning their future directions. The article would be of interest to students looking ahead to working in an archives, library or museum and exploring career paths; supervisors and mentors who work with emerging professionals; professional associations and communities of practice; and educators who have a role in developing curriculum in educational or workplace contexts. 相似文献

In this essay, the author ruminates on the relationship between collecting and archival appraisal. He argues that collecting
does not necessarily equal appraisal, although society and even archivists value it as an important function. The author stresses
that the critical need is for archivists to have a clear perspective, whether highly theoretical or immensely practical, of
what it is they hope to accomplish in appraising and that they need to document this process so that future researchers and
archivists can understand what archival appraisal meant. As it is, archives might become more valued as important cultural
symbols than for the records they actually hold. The notion of an “end” of collecting is in the sense that collecting is appraising,

Design educators see the need for responsible designers but often disagree over how these individuals should behave or how they might encourage their students to become ethically aware practitioners. With this dichotomy in mind, this essay examines professional moral responsibility from the standpoint of immunity claims. Specifically, it shows how designers attempt to minimize their moral culpability by using pardons arising from role morality or collective responsibility. The essay also shows the effect these claims have on the environment where design students regularly work. The discussion gives design educators new starting points to consider for more nuanced departmental, curricular, and classroom responses to develop and graduate responsible designers. 相似文献

This essay comments on the various papers presented at the 2004 SAA conference on archival education. The author, after reading most of the papers, asked the conference organizer to change the name of the closing essay from a generic “commentary” to one playing on the announced theme of the meeting, “Are There Really New Directions and Innovations in Archival Education?” The author did not read, and or hear much, about new directions or innovations, and he uses this essay to explain his concerns. This essay considers the challenges of differing cultures in archival repositories and the university where graduate programs reside, the problems of the lack of a critical mass of graduate educators and the creating of the next generation of educators, and the continuing weak performance in research and publishing by the current corps of educators.
