In the field of translation studies, scholars’ understanding of translation in its traditional sense; has shifted along with the popularity and prosperous development of cultural studies in the recent years. Translation is no longer regarded as merely a cross-linguistic activity but essentially cross-cultural communication. Cultural factors begin to gain more and more attention to translators. Nida even claims that"for truly successful translating, biculturalism is even more important than bilingualism". Therefore, this thesis will focus on analyzing the influence of cultural differences between Chinese and English on the English translation. This thesis firstly discusses embodiments of cultural differences between Chinese and English; after that, it focuses on influences of cultural differences on translation; last but not least, this thesis also suggests some translating techniques.  相似文献

The object of this paper is to study the translatability of culture through the enlightenment from Legge's translation of Lun Yu.A critical study of Legge's translation from a cultural angel is made before two principles peculiar to the translation of Chinese classics are proposed. The combination of classiczing and orientalizing the English language should be strived for in the translation of Chinese classics, and at the same time,it is of great significance to observe rather than break the limit of translatability.  相似文献

With rapid development of China,a growing number of foreign products are entering the Chinese market. An excellent translation of a product’s advertisement from English to Chinese undoubtedly contributes to its successful promotion in the Chinese market.Although the translation practice contains multiple difficulties, the translation of lexical stylistic devices is a big challenge for translators. It is not simply because lexical stylistic devices are diverse and various in form, but also because most devices involve linguistic and cultural differences between English and Chinese. This thesis analyzed a number of current English to Chinese translations of the devices in commercial advertisements, which mainly come from two translation scholars’works and official websites of world-known brands.By analyzing the selected data, seven translation strategies are found to be the major translation strategies in this respect, namely literal translation, free translation, flexible translation, extended translation, adaptation translation, compensation translation and amplification translation strategies. Moreover,a number of linguistic and cultural issues which need to be considered by translators are also illustrated here.  相似文献

Most of the studies on sight translation are related to analyzing effort models. Some scholars have established effort models for interpreting activities. However, the majority of the research published in English was conducted between English and European languages.Experiments written in English on interpreting between English and Chinese are limited. The purpose of this research is to explore the problems that occurred in students’performance of sight translation with a view to improving students’performance and the training method. The results of the experiment show that ST skills are composed of two parts:linguistic capacity and delivery skills. The problems that occurred in the case study were presented as delivery problems. However, the reason for the problems was lack of linguistic transfer capacity. This study recommends that students should be trained both on linguistic capacity and delivery skills.  相似文献

As you all know, translation is an art that requires a lot of skills. Wide horizon, literature connotation and constant practice make a successful translator. And in translation we have to pay special attention to the semantic comparisons of different languages. This paper probes into the four features of comparisons between Chinese & English vocabulary, that is, coincidence, parallel, vacancy and conflict. At the same time, it explores how to deal with some problems in translation, too.  相似文献

As a method of bridging language and culture, translation has played a significant part in connecting the ideas of people all over the world and accelerating the communication in politics, economy, culture, education, science and technology. China has increased cultural exchanges with many other countries, and a great number of foreign films have flooded into our country. Thus, how to appropriately translate the foreign films becomes an urgent issue. In the process of translating English films to Chinese ones, the translator should use a method to attend to the content of the movie itself, especially recreational artistic features, as well as tremendous differences between English language and Chinese language culture. This paper attempts to compare the different film versions of Pride and Prejudice (edition 1995), and analyzes the examples of literal translation and free translation in order to reveal the difficulty of which translation method to choose in film translation. Thus, based on the comparison, we could get a tentative result that which kind of film version is more accepted by most audiences so that we can provide the film translators some new train of thought.  相似文献

Image is not only an essential part, but also a major means to convey the implications in English poems. It is a literal and concrete representation of a sensory experience of an object. The rendering of images in English poems into Chinese can be guided by the dynamic equivalent translation theory put forward by Dr.Eugene A Nida. The theory emphasizes the roughly equivalent response of the target language receptors to the TL text to that of the source language receptors to the SL text.To achieve a Dynamic Equivalence, methods like Direct Translation,Addition, and Substitution can be employed in the translation of images in English poems.  相似文献

The translation practice is not only a change of language but also a change of culture. The"cultural default"is derived from the cultural differences between the SL (Source Language) and TL (Target Language), is a very troublesome thing for the translators. When there appears the phenomenon of cultural default, it is necessary to compensate for it, in this way, adding gloss translation is a very good way to do it , especially in the literary translation. This essay will discuss the phenomenon of"cultural default"and advantage of adding gloss translation in literary translation.  相似文献

As is known to all,Tang Poem(TP) reflects the humanities, the place and the people, the political and cultural life of the Tang dynasty.TP must be translated cautiously and detail.Poetry translation may be considered a rivalry between two languages(or even between two cultures) which vies to express the original idea best. That is to say,it is most important to grasp the cultural background in that period before one can study the translation of TP from a cultural perspective.Culture will not fade as time goes by and will not vanish as the world changes. How do TP be translated into English by application of linguistic context analysis? Firstly, the translator should have a thorough understanding of the content and background, and accordingly use various techniques of translation,e.g.Literal translation, free translation, transliteration, etc;furthermore, the style of the original must be given serious consideration.Linguistic context analysis includes phonetic context analysis, syntax context analysis and syntactic context analysis. As for the syntax,as far as syntax is concerned, there are many differences between Chinese and English.Mr.Wang Li points out:"western language is rules-oriented,but Chinese is man-oriented"(Shen Xiaolong.1990:141).As for the syntax,he says:"structure of TP is close-knit and flaws less, which is inflexible, but western grammar isn’t." this theses attempts to analysis how does an English version of a TP embody the style of the original poetic work by using proper syntactical form.  相似文献

Image is a term that mainly embodies in the composition of classical Chinese poetry(CCP). Effective translation of images is crucial to the grasp of original meanings in a poem. As aesthetic beauty is the primary concern in poetry, the conveyance of beauty in image has a direct impact in translation. To analyze translation strategies of imagery beauty, the theory of“translation levels”by Xu Jun is adopted as a criterion in comparing variant English versions of CCP in the aesthetic level. Images are selected from Seven-character quatrains typified for abundant sources of images, and features of images are put forward at the aesthetic level. Through the analysis, images are rendered by recreation of the sensuous and emotional beauty.  相似文献

Literary writing is inseparable from aesthetic values and it is the same as with literary traslation. However, due to different social and cultural traditions, people from different culture have different presuppositions and expectations of beauty, which cause difficulty in conveying this beauty in literary translation. This paper tries to analyze the respective effects of the Chinese and western aesthetic values on the translation between the Chinese language and the English one.By analyzing the differences in the aspects of philosophical influence, moral standards and the form between the Chinese culture and the English one, this paper concludes that it is the task of the translators to make some adjustment in order to cater to the aesthetic values of the target language and convey the beauty of the original work to readers at the same time.  相似文献
