In the winter of 1993/1994, the Pennsylvania State University (Penn State) Libraries began a project to test several of the emerging commercial document suppliers. The purpose was to evaluate their responses in terms of speed, efficiency, quality, and cost effectiveness. The testing was done in four science branch libraries at University Park. In each of the branches (Earth & Mineral Sciences, Engineering, Mathematics, and Physical Sciences) requests that were submitted for Interlibrary Loan (ILL) were reviewed. Those that qualified under the pilot project guidelines were sent to commercial suppliers of documents, instead of through the normal ILL work flow. Compiled data indicated that the cost of each item and the time taken to supply items were less than that required for ILL. The pilot project suggests that when integrated into ILL work flows, acquiring items through commercial document delivery suppliers would assist in making the process less costly and more efficient. 相似文献

ABSTRACT Through an examination of fill time data for dissertations requested through traditional ILL and the Dissertation Express document delivery service, this article investigates the cost-effectiveness of using a commercial document supplier for obtaining dissertations. ABSTRACT This article proposes that an all-round practical training and educational enhancement is possible for library school students working in the ILL department. ILL and document delivery as described puts student trainees in contact with all the facets of librarianship by exposing them to the practical operations of the different departments as well as by exposure to the practical details of interlibrary lending. ABSTRACT When deciding whether to use UnCover2 or ILL for document delivery, consider these factors: accessibility of the article, how quickly it is needed, and how much it costs the patron. Then within your ILL unit, determine the average delivery time for libraries that own the material. An informal study of UnCover2 shows that within Colorado, ILL can usually deliver quickly enough at no charge to the patron. If the owning libraries cannot deliver within the time frame needed and the patron will pay an average of $10 to $12, UnCover2 can do the job. 相似文献

The Alma Jordan Library (AJL) is located on the St. Augustine Campus, Trinidad and Tobago and is the largest academic library in the University of the West Indies' library system. This article examines interlibrary loan and document delivery (ILL/DD) services, discusses existing ILL/DD activities, and analyzes usage statistics at this Caribbean educational institution. It reviews the current literature that exists about ILL/DD in the Caribbean and other academic institutions outside the region. ABSTRACTReadCube Access is a patron-driven, document delivery system that provides immediate access to articles from journals owned by Nature Publishing Group. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the use of ReadCube Access as an interlibrary loan (ILL) alternative for nonsubscribed Nature journals at Auburn University, a research university with a School of Pharmacy and a School of Veterinary Medicine. An analysis of ten months’ usage and costs are presented along with the results of a user satisfaction survey. Auburn University Libraries found ReadCube to be an acceptable alternative to ILL for unsubscribed Nature journals and at current levels of use and cost, consider ReadCube to be financially sustainable. 相似文献

Abstract Publishers and librarians do not agree on the use of electronic journal files as a source for interlibrary loans. The efficiency possible in electronic ILL is valued by the supplying libraries and of concern to publishers. Publishers do not accept CONTU photocopying guidelines as applicable to electronic ILL. This position is based on the historical context in which CONTU occurred and the specific wording of the CONTU report. No agreement on new guidelines has been possible to date, resulting in the need for individual license negotiations. Copyright-cleared document delivery is one alternative. Alternate models for broad database access to electronic journals is another. A new attempt to define guidelines for resource sharing is a third possibility. 相似文献

Summary Academic libraries traditionally provide document delivery services to the campus-based community. Academic fee-based information services accept document requests from corporate, industrial, and professional clients who are willing to pay for a value-added service that includes rush handling, delivery to a third party, or locating an item with a vague citation. The Purdue University Libraries' Technical Information Service (TIS) has grown into a successful venture by developing staff with specialized skills to identify, locate, obtain, and distribute increasingly difficult document orders with short turnaround times. There are advantages to the parent academic library, especially the Interlibrary Loan (ILL) unit, in having a fee-based service to which time-consuming, unusual or expensive requests can be referred. With the potential to increase these advantages comes the need to define clearly the respective roles of these units. 相似文献
